Training in Leicester

The School is located in the Department of Cellular Pathology (Histopathology and Cytopathology).  University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL) NHS Trust comprises Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI), Leicester General Hospital (LGH) and Glenfield Hospital (GH).  The main site for cellular pathology is LRI, with time also spent at GH.

  • UHL provides health care to a population of over 900,000 and;
  • has in the region of 3,000 beds.
  • All branches of Pathology are accredited by the Clinical Pathology Accreditation Scheme

The LRI site is the main base for surgical pathology and gynaecological cytology.  The laboratory receives approximately 44,000 requests each year plus 6,000 non-gynae cytology samples.

The specials laboratory is based at LRI where there is a wide range of histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy and molecular pathology.

The GH laboratory deals with breast pathology, and some thoracic pathology and cytopathology.

Training in Nottingham

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest in the UK with an annual budget of more than £500 million. It has a total of 2,200 hospital beds across both campuses. Nottingham University Hospitals Trust is located on the two campuses of Nottingham City Hospital Campus and Queen's Medical Centre Campus.

Training

  • Nottingham has 18 general STR posts rotating between Nottingham City Hospital (NCH), Queen's Medical Centre (QMC), Lincoln and Derby.
  • Nottingham 12 + 2 Academic Clinical Fellows, Pathlinks  -2, Derby - 2 Subspecialist Posts: 1 Neuropath, 1 Paediatric path,  1 Breast path 

ST1 trainees will spend time in both Queen's and Nottingham City Hospital.  At some point during ST2-3 all trainees are required to go to Lincoln and/or Derby for a 12 month DGH attachment. After that trainees stay in Nottingham, rotating through both sites until completion of training.

City hospital has upper GI, Gynae, Endocrine, Respiratory and Cytology, Renal, Urology, Soft tissue, Breast, Lymphoreticular

 At QMC the specialties are GI and HPB, Gynae, Dermatology, Head & neck,  Neuropathology and Paediatric pathology. All PMs are performed at QMC.

Cut up is team based and trainees report most of what they have cut up.

Post Mortem Pathology

Approximately 1,700 autopsies are performed per year across UHL including perinatal cases and adult hospital autopsies. 

The large majority of the cases are, however, Coroner's autopsies.

The LRI provides public mortuary facilities for the counties of Leicestershire and Rutland. 

Members of the Division of Forensic Pathology undertake forensic autopsies at LRI and throughout the East Midlands.

Nottingham Univ Hospital

The Department

Cellular Pathology is also based on the two sites but is managed as a single entity. It is part of the Diagnostics and Clinical Support Division.

There are 3 professors and there is research strength particularly in Neuropathology, Breast Pathology and GI pathology. 

All specialty areas are covered including Paediatric and Neuropathology, although all Bone tumours are referred to Birmingham.
