Audit and Research

At Addenbrooke's Hospital, all trainees have access to the Molecular Pathology Unit, as well as the various departments of biological science within the University of Cambridge.  These include the Department of Pathology, based in the city centre, headed by Professor Andrew Wyllie. The hospital shares the same site as many research institutions including MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (which has produced 14 Nobel prize winners) and the Hutchison MRC Research Centre.  At the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, members of the department have good research links with the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia.

Trainees on the Eastern Rotation are actively encouraged to undertake research.  A short "taster" period exclusively spent in research may be undertaken by secondment to one of the University of Cambridge departments which may lead to a higher degree should the trainee wish.  This is a protected post which may be undertaken by any trainee on the specialist registrar rotation.

All trainees are encouraged to undertake audit projects.  A wide range of studies have been undertaken at both sites, many of which have been presented at international meetings.  Comprehensive help for these activities is provided in each trust.

Teaching Opportunities

The Cambridge University Pathology Department has one of the best undergraduate pathology teaching courses nationally and gained a top score of 24/24 following the Teaching Quality Assessment in 2000/2001.  Year 1 trainees would have the opportunity to contribute to the design and updating of undergraduate course material and would participate in pathology practical teaching to second year medical students.  The autopsy service provides a hugely valuable teaching resource in traditional and digital video formats for post-mortem demonstrations for clinical students.  In addition, teaching is provided on the pathology component of the University of Cambridge Clinical course.

Cytology Training School

A sophisticated web-accessible online archive of high quality pathology images with associated descriptions of gross and microscopic pathology

DVD collection of interesting post mortem pathology and complicated post mortem techniques

Histopathology is offering 'run-through' clinical programmes for specialty training.  For further information on training for years 2 to 5 (subject to satisfactory progression) please refer to the relevant deanery website to inform your decision when stating preferences.

Clinical Meetings

At both centres a wide range of clinico-pathological, Grand Rounds and MDT meetings are held on a regular basis, including many by teleconference to distant sites.  Trainees are encouraged to attend the appropriate meetings during their rotations.  Senior SpRs are also given the opportunity to present cases at these meetings - thus helping them with presentation skills.  Trainees are encouraged to attend directorate and departmental business meetings at both centres.

Learning Opportunities

In addition to the clinical meetings there are a number of other established learning opportunities for trainees.  These include:

  • Introductory sub-speciality tutorials are provided for Year One trainees
  • Weekly "interesting surgicals"/"black box" meetings
  • A structured monthly MRCPath course comprising lectures, seminars, workshops, etc,
