Surgical Pathology
The RLUH processes in excess of 25,000 surgical specimens per annum. Year One Trainees are an integral part of the individual reporting speciality teams which are supervised by consultants. General Histopathology reporting is also undertaken at the Aintree University Hospital (AUH) and Arrowe Park Hospital (APH) sites which together process more than 19,000 surgical specimens. SpRs are encouraged to develop sub-speciality interests whilst they rotate through the Liverpool training school. The department is one of five in the country to offer training for the Diploma in Dermatopathology.
Cytopathology
- 34,000 gynaecological and;
- 6000 non-gynaecological cytopathology specimens are processed at the RLUH annually
At the Linda McCartney Cancer Centre, consultant cytopathologists run aspiration clinics which trainees are encouraged to participate in. The Liverpool Cytology training school is located in the department and trains biomedical scientists and medical staff. Additionally, the AUH and APH sites also provide training in cytopathology to Year One Trainees.
Autopsy Pathology
The Liverpool training site for autopsy is based at the RLUH, however, autopsy training is also carried out at the AUH and ARH units. The RLUH has a new and fully equipped autopsy suite which includes facilities for high-risk autopsies.The unit has two Home Office Pathologists who are supported by two SpRs. Trainee pathologists undertake autopsy examination under consultant supervision and may participate in weekly PM demonstrations to students, medical staff, and hospital professionals. Year One Trainees at the Liverpool training school will be given the opportunity to complete 20 autopsies in the year.
