South Western - Bristol Royal Infirmary
The School is a collegiate style training school, based around four training centres with pairs of Year 1 trainees in each centre. The four training centres are the Bristol Royal Infirmary/Weston General Hospital and Southmead Hospital associated with the University of Bristol and the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital (Exeter) and Derriford Hospital (Plymouth) associated with the Peninsula Medical School.
The major element of the training programme is comprehensive practical experience of clinical surgical pathology, cytopathology and autopsy pathology with consultant supervision on a one-to-one basis. There is also a structured formal training programme.
Since only two Year 1 trainees are working in each major centre, there will be really excellent opportunities to enjoy a stimulating environment and close working relationships with senior pathologists in the departments. It is also planned that there will be regular training meetings where trainees from more than one department can meet and share their learning experiences.
