Royal Society of Medicine Days
At least twice a year all Thames Year 1 trainees are brought together in the historic setting of the Royal Society of Medicine in London. This allows coverage of the recently introduced Generic Skills curriculum, important life-skills for any junior doctor, but approached with a Histopathology slant. After these RSM days there is a course dinner, which is provided free for trainees.
As Histology has always been at the forefront of study into human disease, these RSM days cover important topics in research, publications and academic pathology. There willl be exposure to research methods as part of the Generic Skills curriculum.
'On the job' Learning
Apprentiship is an important aspect of training in any medical specialty. It is clealy how the Year 1 trainees gets an idea of what Histopathology is all about. But the intial year in the Thames Histopathology Training School gives clearer expectations, higher quallity imput and more frequent feedback, so that a year 1 trainee in Thames can be as ready as possible for the ARCP and progression to run-through.
As part of their apprenticeship, in Thames, successful applicants for the Uear 1 training programme will participate in macroscopic description, section selection, microscpy and report writing of surgical specimens at each of the sites, undersupervision of consultants. A dedicated Educational Supervisor will oversee their training in each centre. All sites have teaching microscope facilities and there are dedicated microscopes for the year 1 trainees. There is an extensive range of surgical material. Trainees will be given the opportunity to attend Multidisciplinary Team Meetings (MDTs) and other clinic-pathological meetings.
Audit, Clinicapathological Correlation and Presentation Skills
We have also at the RSM addressed the issue of Clinical Governance - specific to Histopathology. We run an audit competition with a prize. Opportunities will be available for each Year 1 trainee to complete an audit project and present this as a poster at the Royal Society of Medicine. Also an interesting case is written up and presented at the Clinicopathological PowerPoint Presentation Day. So in the first year, all Thames Histopathology trainees can enhance their CVs by presenting a poster and an Oral Presentation at the Royal Society of Medicine.
Specialised Pathology
There are excellent specialist centres, with consultants from these centres teaching the successful candidates in a range of areas, including bone, soft tissue, paediatrics, perinatal, neuropathology and cardio-respiratory pathology.
