The University of Birmingham was founded in 1900 when it was granted royal charter by Queen Victoria. It was a successor to Mason Science College, and is the earliest of the Russell universities in the United Kingdom. The teaching of Medicine however, can be traced back to 1767, when Mr John Tomlinson (1st Surgeon to Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary), conducted Anatomy lectures. http://www.bham.ac.uk
