Histopathology Department - Leeds

The Leeds Department comprises 33 Consultants who are all sub-specialised. Pathologists supply serviceds to Leeds General Infirmary and St. James's University Hospital, the main teaching hospitals, and the surrounding hospitals of Seacroft, Chapel Allerton, Wharfedale and Cookridge, and to the Leeds Chest Clinic and Leeds Dental Institute. There are in excess of 30 trainees (ST1-5 trainees) including lecturers/academic trainees. There is an active academic training programme in the University department, which several recent trainees have entered following their ST1 year.
The ST1 trainees are housed in a dedicated bay within the trainees' area of the department, and are provided with a microscope and PC connected to the hospital network with personal E-mail and internet access.
The consultants are arranged into teams which serve (1) gastroenterology, (2) dermatology, soft tissue, respiratory and cardiothoracic pathology, (3) head and neck and endocrine pathology, (4) neuropathology, (5) gynaecology, (6) liver/renal, (7) urology, (8) breast and (9) paediatrics. Autopsies are conducted and supervised by a number of the consultants on a rota basis.
A full histochemical, immunocytochemical, electron microscopical and molecular pathology service is provided.
The ST2-5 trainees rotate to several other hospitals in the Yorkshire region. These may currently include Trusts in Hull, York, Bradford, Harrogate, Mid-Yorkshire (Wakefield and Pontefract), and Calderdale (Halifax).

Histopathology in Sheffield
The Sheffield Department comprises 25
consultants with team-based reporting and sub-specialisation. The
rotation is primarily based at the Royal Hallamshire
Hospital with attachments at the Northern General
Hospital, Medico-Legal (forensic) Centre, Sheffield Children's
Hospital, and the District General Hospital (Chesterfield Royal
Hospital and Doncaster Royal Infirmary).
There are in excess of 15 trainees, running from ST1-ST5. There is no ACF support presently for trainees at this site, although trainees are able to move to ACF posts at Leeds, if so desired.
The Department is currently being re-fashioned with modern trainee facilities including dedicated microscope/PC connections with good internet and journal based material. The programme is specifically mapped to the College curriculum.
The consultants are broadly fit into teams and groups that operate across the sites reflecting gastro-intestinal, dermatological, endocrine, soft tissue/lymphoma/male genito-urinary, gynaecological, neuropathology/ophthalmology, breast, paediatrics, autopsy, thoracic and renal sub-specialities. A full range of histochemical, immunocytochemical and ultrastructural analyses are possible along with specialised molecular testing.
