How many training sites in the School?
There are 3 training sites at the department: the main site of activity is in the new department in the St James's Insititue of Oncology, with some activity at the Leeds General Infirmary and Britannia House - Morley.
What type of training model is in place?
Formal teaching and apprenticeship.
How many Year 1 trainees are in the School?
The maximum capacity for the Leeds Training School is 8. Numbers in any one year are adjusted to account for national manpower calculations and local run-through opportunities.
As a multi-site centre, is there a rotation between sites and how much time is spent at each?
Most of the time will be spent in the main department in St James's University Hospital, with smaller amounts of time at Leeds General Infirmary (autopsy, neuropathology) and at Britannia House, Morley (cytology).
What are the block teaching arrangements: ie number of blocks per year?
We currently run 3 weeks of block teaching. One is national in Bristol, and the other two are for Northern Group of trainees (ie Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle), and held in Liverpool and Manchester. A national exam practice day is also programmed. However, these arrangements are reviewed on an annual basis.
What are the typical subjects covered (subject to amendment on a year by year basis!)?
The block teaching content is nationally agreed and mapped to the RCPath year 1 curriculum.
What usually happens during induction week?
Introduction to laboratory practice, histotechnology and health and safety.
Do you have additional training days, and if so, what?
Additional training days include the annual summer and winter Pathological Society meetings.
